A BOX OF YOU

This interview project is about the two names referring people, “Gaikokujin” and ”Nihonjin”.

Your appearance, name, and nationalities are important.

However, people are distracted by those three big pieces of information.

People judge whether you’re “Gaikokujin” or “Nihonjin”

by your appearance, name, and nationalities. Regardless if you have a life in Japan,

you’re working in Japan, and speaking Japanese fluently.

We’re divided into the “Gaijin team” or “Nihonjin team” by society.

The purpose of the interview project is to see the real person behind the wall of

“Gaikokujin” and “Nihonjin”.

I will give you the skeleton drawer type box. You will choose the items that you will put in the skeleton box. The most important requirement is that you can put as many items you like as long as you can close the box properly even after putting the items inside. The properties that you are going to put in the box could be something that surrounds your daily life, memorable for you, important in explaining who you are, and related to your favorites.

I need you to express the “real you” by the contents that you put in the box. I want you to be creative, honest, and unapologetic. You being you.

Next, We will wear a pair of blue gloves.

Then, we will start the interview about each content in the box.

All interviews are translated into eight languages. Chinese, Japanese, Korean, English, Vietnamese, Tagalog, Portuguese, and Spanish.
